What Questions Should you Ask New Website Design Clients

Below we wanted to run through the ‘go to’ essential questions that we ask all of our new clients in need of a website. Understanding why we ask these could be useful to both designers gathering inspiration for their own clients, or perhaps if you are reading this as a customer, hopefully it will allow you to understand reasons behind our questions.

Can you give me a few words to describe your business?

You can do this in as many or as few words as you like. The fewer the better since it allows you to get straight to the point. The ideas is for you to tell us about the business so we understand the type of business and people we would be working with.

What would you like the website to accomplish?

This is an important one. Every businesses website exists to serve a purpose. It could be any of the following examples:

  • Promoting a service or product
  • Gathering information
  • Educating
  • Receiving leads
  • Increasing brand awareness
  • Selling products online

Answering this allows us to understand what your expectations are and the reasons for needing a website so we can give you the best solution.

Are there any specific features you would like your website to have?

Websites are a very personal tool for your business, each containing unique requirements. Therefore, we treat each project differently in terms of its look and its features.

This question allows us to understand exactly what types of things you expect to see on your website, be it a blog, online store or a photo gallery we don’t like to assume what you want. We also take this opportunity to see if there something we think could be beneficial towards the success of your online business.

Do you have a preference on colours or style?

Most often, companies already have a defined branding guideline document, highlighting colours, fonts and types of photography which they would like the website to adhere to? However, if you don’t it’s not a problem. Just let us know what colours you do like and those that should be avoided.

We never compromise user experience when creating the athletics of a website. Your customers always come first, we just work your desired style in that nicely.

Who are your competitors?

Understanding your competitors not only allows us to understand your industry, but also who you are up against. Then we will work to make you stand out better.

Have you seen any websites you like, and why?

This question tells us a lot. Often you would have seen a couple of websites you like the look of, even if it is from one of your competitors. Telling us what websites you like along with what you like about them will helps us understand your preferred style and expectations.

We will always aim to deliver you a website in which you are happy with, wors for your customers and makes you to stand out.

What are your timeframes? / When do you want this live?

Again, this question allows us not only to manage your expectations with how long your project might take, but to also gage your urgency. We will always do our best to deliver as close to your deadline as possible, if not before.

We won’t compromise on quality just to get something done quickly. Often, deadlines are a little flexible, however if this isn’t the case, we will often work with you to find a solution that you are happy with. For example, perhaps there a couple of features your website doesn’t actually require in order for it to go live, in that case, we will complete the fundamentals, put your website live, then continue to develop the outstanding features.

Are you supplying your own content?

Sometimes, clients haven’t thought about this. Or perhaps assume it is something they don’t need to worry about. Since we almost always build our websites using WordPress, we enable our clients to fully manage their content so they can easily add the text, images and other types of media to their own website.

If you require some help building your content, we work with a few trusted copywriters that are more than up to the job.

Do you have a budget?

This might appear to be an intrusive question, and by all means you don’t have to tell us if you don’t want to. By letting us know what your requirements are along with the budget can often tell us from the start as to whether or not your project is something we can help you with.

Do you already have Website Hosting?

Hosting is always required in order to get your website online. Talking about this makes as aware as to whether it is something need or something you have in place already. If you have it already, we will work with you to get your new website online with your current hosting provider. However, if you require hosting, it is something we can provide on top of the website design and build.
